Focusing on Central and South America, four key ports and golden transport routes!
Latin America hosts the world's golden maritime route—the Panama Canal. This shipping shortcut, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, makes the Central and South American and Caribbean regions a core hub for global cross-border trade. In addition to the main ports on the east and west coasts of South America, the transshipment ports along the canal and the Caribbean coast are the lifelines of the entire shipping route. Below, we introduce several key basic ports along the Central and South American shipping routes.

Cologne Free Trade Zone Port
· Region: Panama
· Location: Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal, northeast of Colón City
· Key Features: As the largest free trade zone in the Americas, it is also the world's second-largest cargo transshipment port (second only to Hong Kong, China)
· Transportation and Logistics Value: The port area has a well-developed road network, with highways directly connecting to Panama City and major cities nationwide. It is the preferred port for international transshipment trade, and goods transferred here can be conveniently distributed throughout Central and South America, as well as all countries and regions of the Caribbean.
· Supporting Hub: Port of Manzanillo, Panama, located adjacent to the Colón area, is the largest container transshipment port on the Caribbean route

Port of Caucedo
· Location: Dominican Republic

· Key Features: Equipped with a world-class modern maritime terminal and a comprehensive free trade zone; with complete infrastructure, it is a major port of significance in the Caribbean region
· Transportation and Logistics Value: The domestic highway network is well-connected, allowing not only rapid access to the capital, Santo Domingo, but also direct connection to the Dominican-Haitian border, making it a key hub for cargo distribution in the eastern Caribbean islands
· Core Uses: Import and export for the Dominican Republic and surrounding island nations, regional short-distance distribution, and free trade zone warehousing and distribution

Kingston Harbor
·Region: Jamaica

·Transport and Logistics Value: The island has a fully covered road network, enabling fast distribution throughout Jamaica; the port area has a well-developed feeder service, and relying on coastal shipping, cargo can be conveniently transshipped to major ports along the coasts of North and South America.
·Main Uses: Mainline container calling, cross-regional feeder transshipment, and North-South American cargo intermodal transport

Port of San Juan
·Region: Puerto Rico
·Location: San Juan Bay on the northeast coast of Puerto Rico Island
·Key Features: The largest port in Puerto Rico, located at the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, with significant strategic value. It is an important maritime transportation hub between the two oceans and handles massive amounts of international shipping cargo year-round.
·Transport and Logistics Value: The port area is well-equipped, with smooth connections between sea and land transportation. It serves not only as a gateway for local imports and exports but also as a transitional hub for North America heading to the Caribbean region.
·Practical Reminder: Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth, so all shipping operations at this port must comply with U.S. shipping regulations, including mandatory AMS manifest submission. Documents and declaration processes are consistent with U.S. standards. It is essential to plan and prepare the documentation in advance before shipping to avoid inspection, detention, or delay risks.
These ports are not only regional logistics hubs but also important economic and trade partners in China’s Belt and Road cooperation, facilitating smooth global trade.
